There is a requirement for a design engineer preferably an individual with some experience in the design and application of film capacitors. However, a degree qualified electrical engineer would be considered and training provided.  The role encompasses the design of bespoke products and also the initiation and management of research and development projects which will ensure the business maintains technical leadership in the market.


The individual should be self motivated and flexible. The successful applicant  would be working as part of a small team with considerable prospects for advancement as the business grows.


Training will be provided as required.

2017’s installment of the biennial Pulsed Power Conference will take place between 18th-22nd of June.

This year sees the 21st conference and, for the first time ever, it is in the United Kingdom. The conference is to be hosted at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, right on the seafront of the historic town of Brighton.

The Pulsed Power Conference is a forum for the discussion of all aspects of the science, technology and application of Pulsed Power. Pulsed Power, the technique for using electrical energy to generate high power short pulse(s), is used in a large range of applications from plasma physics and particle beam generation right through to intense magnetic field generation and also industrial and medical applications.

API CAPACITORS IS EXPANDING – New Equipment – Automatic Winder MXL S – Mode

API Capacitors Ltd would like to introduce its newest piece of key equipment. The new winding machine, the Automatic Winder MXL S – Mode. The machine was designed and manufactured in Switzerland to our specific requirements. The investment in this new equipment is a demonstration of our commitment to embrace technological advances in our industry.


The new equipment will provide the company with new capabilities not only to enable new and more complex products to be produced but improvements to our existing product range. The new equipment has created a number of new jobs both at operating and technical levels at the company.


This signals a major step towards the company’s longer term goals in expanding its capabilities in high voltage direct current applications, a key growth sector in the capacitor industry. The demand for power capacitors is high and is projected to increase significantly, as the demand for greater capacity transmission systems continues to increase.

Obsolescence and replacement parts

In many applications power capacitors will need to be replaced before the equipment package reaches the end of its useful life. This is particularly true in mid-life refurbishments in the rail traction and marine industries. These refurbishments typically take place after 20-30 years of operation and it is common to find that the capacitors are no longer produced by the original OEM which confronts the user with a serious obsolescence problem.

API specialises in the supply of capacitors specifically designed to meet a customer’s application requirements. This capability allows APIC to provide a solution to most obsolescence situations.

We are able to provide replacements for most brands of capacitor including, but not limited to, EPCOS, TDK, Vishay and Electronicon.

APIC offer an extensive range of snubber capacitors for use in older style Gate Turn Off Thyristor circuits and have seen an increase in demand for these styles of capacitors as a number of the mainstream manufacturers are discontinuing many of these capacitor designs.

API Capacitors have provided solutions for many customers facing obsolescence problems with some examples being:

Eurostar International  Class 373 Locomotives – API Capacitors successfully undertook the design and production of an all thin dielectric film capacitor to replace a bank of Siemens Electrolytic capacitors used on the auxiliary converter (hotel load converter) circuits on the trains. These particular capacitors provide all the lighting, heating, ventilation, and other hotel facilities in the passenger compartments.

London Underground Central Line – APIC recently completed the supply of replacement filter capacitors on all 92TS rolling stock as a part of the life extension programme and traction systems overhaul to ensure these trains can operate for another 15 – 20 years.

Brush Traction – API Capacitors designed and supplied a number of obsolete designs of power capacitors for use in two brand new battery electric locomotives built in the UK for MTR Corporation in Hong Kong based on 1980s designs.  API was selected as a specialist manufacturer as we are able to re-create retro fit capacitor designs. The brief was to maintain compatibility with existing rolling stock.

All of API Capacitors’ customers benefit from a fully interchangeable product with superior performance, efficiency and reliability.

API Capacitors successfully completed STC Mexico City Metro project

Mexico’s metro system is the second largest in North America, after the New York City Subway, transporting 1.41billion passengers annually.

STC’s main objective was to reduce operating costs including costs related to energy consumption and maintenance costs as well as improving customer service regularity on this line. Having being built between 1982 and 1984 using the traction technology which was available at that time. The trains were now between 25 and 27 years old therefore much of the technology being used was obsolete and underperforming.

In order to reduce costs but still achieve the advantages of a modern traction drive, rather than completely replacing the existing systems, the 150 sets of traction equipment was modernised by the means of an overhaul. Components which were in good working order re-used and unreliable or obsolete parts were to be replaced.

The overhaul was a success resulting in over 35% energy savings achieved, 10% higher than the proposed goal. The reliability of trains has increased as has customer satisfaction and the amount of maintenance was greatly reduced as a reduction in shocks and vibrations, notably in the motor was achieved thanks to continuous power modulation.

API Capacitors were awarded the contract to replace all of the underperforming DC capacitors with modern, high-functioning DC capacitors. Our design engineers were able to design a bespoke replacement capacitor to fit in to place in the existing traction systems with a greatly increased functionality. Our expertise in obsolesce enabled us to do this with ease.

API Capacitors wins Central Line overhaul project contract with London Underground

APIC won the contract with London Underground to replace the capacitors in the Central Line’s dated, unreliable DC traction systems with modern AC traction packages. Currently, almost £8million per year is spent repairing the existing traction motors. By completion in 2022 the AC traction and DTS elements of the overhaul project combined will see:

1. An annual reduction of 836 service affecting failures attributed in the CuPID database to ‘Central line Fleet’, saving 631k Lost Customer Hours with a social benefit of £5.4m per year.
2. An annual reduction of £8m in fleet maintenance costs (£6m material and £2m labour).
3. A net annual reduction in modelled energy consumption of 11GWh, valued at £0.7m, and an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 5,000 tonnes, with a social value of £23k.

Our bespoke designs and specialist abilities in obsolescent capacitors made us the perfect contender for this project.

API Capacitors Gain Worldwide Rail Industry Certification Approval.

API Capacitors have been producing capacitor solutions for the worldwide electronics markets for over 25 years. The latest significant achievement in their ongoing development process is being awarded IRIS certification. This means that API Capacitors have reached International Rail Industry Standard (IRIS) for quality and business systems management. IRIS is the worldwide certification approval for all businesses supplying into the rail sector. This level of excellence will enable API Capacitors Ltd to tender for contracts with the major players in this sector, including GE, Bombardier and Siemens. IRIS adds further, sector specific controls and requirements that reinforces, and adds to, the established ISO 9001 Quality system certification held by the business for over 10 years.

When speaking about their successful IRIS process, Dr. Mike Robinson, the Technical Director said

“This is excellent news for API Capacitors, we had identified the IRIS certification as a key stepping stone for the business. We can now look to sell our technology into the prime rail industry contractors across the globe”.

Since the API group took over the business in October 2012, there has been a major investment programme into the business capabilities. This has focussed on a drive to achieve all of the appropriate national and international certifications and approvals identified as necessary to meet the needs of existing customers, and also to facilitate entry into new customers and markets.


In tandem with the drive for IRIS certification the company has benefited from a major facilities and manufacturing capability upgrade programme. Over the past 2 years the business has invested in:

  • A new clean room for the key winding process.
  • The upgrade and renewal of the high voltage test laboratory.
  • Replacement of the end-spray system with a fully robotic automated process.
  • A fully modernised and more effective and efficient factory heating system
  • The complete update of the IT and communications infrastructure commensurate with a global operation.


With regards to their extensive enhancement programme Managing Director Mr Trevor Baggott believes,

“With our comprehensive, targeted improvement of the manufacturing capabilities we (at APIC) are well positioned to address the specific, niche needs for power capacitor products for both the Rail industry, but also other hi-technology markets that demand high reliability and strict process controls ”. The evolution and development of the quality management system to the IRIS requirement level was supported by consultants Performance Plus Partnership, Laurence Brooks the Managing Director said “We are pleased to be a part of the API developing success story, building the IRIS framework and operating systems was greatly aided by the sound, basic processes already in operation across the company”.
